One of my most memorable childhood vacations was taking the Polar Bear Express to Moosonee. If you’re not familiar, it’s the train from Cochrane to Moosonee — not to be confused with the Polar Express, which is a whole different Christmas‑movie situation.
We took a water taxi to Moose Factory… except “water taxi” was really just a guy with a tiny motorboat. The water was choppy, freezing, and the exact shade of grey that makes you question all your life choices. I was five and terrified.
And why were we doing this? To look at gravestones, of course! What else would you take a small child to see on vacation? My dad was deep in his genealogy era, hunting for the grave of Peter Spence and any other ancestors lurking up north. I don’t remember if he found anything — I was too busy trying not to fall into the Arctic‑level water.
